Notes  Original held in the collection of Earl W Brydges Public Library, Niagara Falls, New York ; This view of the US terminus of the bridge shows two carriages waiting to go through the portal onto the bridge deck. The masonry structure at the left houses the cable anchor. The depth of the anchor pits below the surface of the ground was 18 feet and the length of the anchor chains was 30 feet, The anchors were set in solid rock on the Canadian side, and in masonry on the US side. The anchors had to hold the main cables each of which weighed 82 tons - George Seibel ;

Notes  Original held in the collection of Earl W Brydges Public Library, Niagara Falls, New York ; Between November 1871 and March 1872, the Canadian Tower was enclosed "The northern, southern and western sides of the edifice are covered with corrugated iron as a protection against the possible attack of the fiery fiend from the land. The eastern side - that looking toward the bridge is covered in wood, in perfect imitation of the other surfaces. The whole is painted in a light drab colour" Niagara Falls Gazette July 10 1872. Inside stairways and an Otis elevator were installed, powered by steam. The engine which controlled the car was situated under the Lower landing of the elevator. The steam boiler was in a very neat brick building (seen to the right of the tower) and steam was communicated to the engine by means of a long pipe connected with the boiler passing through the masonry at the base of the tower... - George Seibel ;

Notes  Original held in the collection of Earl W Brydges Public Library, Niagara Falls, New York ; A view taken from the tower on the US side. Ferry Road now Clifton Hill curves up the hill behind the Clifton House (left), bordered by a split rail fence. The buildings at either side of the Canada end of the bridge, the on the left built by George bender Biggar and the one on the right by Philip Bender were built in 1872 ; The library has four other images very similar to this but with different provenances. For ease of use they are all filed under Accession number 421236p ;
