Seed to Seed is back for 2023 at the Niagara Falls library

The Niagara Falls Public Library just launched its Seed to Seed collection for a fifth year in a row. Seed to Seed is, you guessed it, a seed collection meant to encourage community gardening, local food and a culture of sharing. It offers fruit, vegetable and herb seeds to the Niagara Falls community free of charge.

No library card is required to borrow seeds from the collection. All you have to do is fill out the online seed form available at nfpl.info/SeedToSeedForm2023. You can choose up to five varieties of seeds and they’ll be available for you to pick up at the library location of your choice.

Please note: the Stamford library is currently under construction, so it will not be available as a pickup location until further notice.

However, our pop-up library at A.N. Myer is now open on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, from 3 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., so you will be able to pick up your seed orders there. Additionally, the library will be visiting the weekly Niagara Falls Farmers Market when it opens so you can eventually borrow seeds from us there as well.

After that, you can grow your fruits, vegetables and herbs. Then, as your plant reaches maturity at the end of its growing season, collect the seeds, dry them out, place them in a labelled envelope (tell us the common name, variety and year) and return them to any Niagara Falls Public Library location. This will help restock the Seed to Seed collection for the following season.

The library has a variety of seeds for you to choose from no matter what you’re into. The packages contain the recommended number of seeds to get you started with a couple of plants, as well as some information on how to plant, harvest and save the seeds.

In addition, the library has published a mini-magazine full of useful instructions on how to save the seeds of most of the plants on offer. This way, you can return your seeds, thereby ensuring our Seed to Seed collection is sustainable for years to come. Plus, you can keep some leftover seeds and grow even more vegetables or herbs next year.

If you’d like more information, visit nfpl.info/seed, call the library at 905-356-8080 or visit any one of our locations and a staff member will be happy to assist you.
