Click to view the plaque Fifteen records were broken, another established and one tied, on the long Saturday in June 1951, that the Stamford Collegiate Track & Field Team won the Dominion and Quebec Track & Field Championships. The Review stated it was a record busting seventh annual Quebec Provincial and Dominion interscholastic track and field championships - with more than 500 entries for a record itself, on the day long competition of Quebec and Ontario contestants. A smart, competent group from Stamford Collegiate, ran wild in the senior division for recognized Dominion honours. They piled up 48 points against a three way tie of only 11 points for second place. Stamford made a real team show in winning the senior division, and two junior native Canadian records fell in the process. There was only one double winner in Niagara’s all-round performance. Bob Kilkenny won the running broad jump and the hop, step and jump, racking up a junior mark of 46 feet, 6 ½ inches in the latter event. Stamford’s George McGowan should have been in a class by himself when he eased over the bar for a junior record of 12 feet, 3/16 inches in the pole vault. Fred Ruish won the senior 12-pound shot put and Art Darch the discuss toss to round out Stamford wins. For the second consecutive year in a row, under the guidance of Coach John Long, the 1951 Stamford Track & Field Team won the Dominion Track and Field Championships. The ten athletes and their hard working mentor were welcomed home by an impromptu but heart-warming welcome by over 200 members of the Stamford student body. Coach Long and his team were pleasantly surprised by the huge assembly waiting for them, that broke into school cheers and songs in tribute to the champions for their all-conquering feat. |
