Full size image of plaque Wiberforce Plummer Smith was born on April 15, 1914, in Niagara Falls, Ontario. He began school at six years and he stood at or near the top of his class through public school. He attended Niagara Falls Collegiate, later transferring to Stamford High School, where he proceeded to his Junior Matriculations. He was an active leader in all school activities and excelled in basketball, rugby and hockey. At fifteen, Wilbur played right wing for the Niagara Falls Cataracts, an Ontario Hockey Association Team. Scouts had been following the team for some time. At seventeen, weighing 170 pounds, he advanced to the Niagara Falls Senior Team, also an Ontario Hockey Association Team. He possessed tremendous speed and packed one of the hardest shots in hockey. The following year, Wilbur went to play for the Hamilton Tigers. While playing for Hamilton, the Montreal Maroons, of the National Hockey League, offered him a contract to play professional hockey. They wanted Wilbur to finish the season with them and also to sign for the 1933 season. Unfortunately, his professional career was abruptly ended due to a severe head injury caused by a hockey puck to the head. Wilbur lived the reset of his life in hospital and passed away on August 2, 1980 in Hamilton, Ontario. |
