Full size image of plaque One of Niagara's shining athletes of the era, Malcolm J. "Tuffy" McEwan at the age of 17 was a major prospect for the Montreal Canadiens hockey team. They brought him to Montreal to play on their junior team, known at the time as the Montreal Royals. His prospects for a pro career were tremendous until World War II called. Despite a four-year hold on sports due to the war, Tuffy's athletic career flourished afterward with his greatest accomplishment being his victory in Canada's largest boxing tournament. Tuffy won the Jack Dempsey "White Hope" championship in the heavyweight division.Thffy also played football with the local Dynamos, where he garnered enough attention to gain a try-out with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. A multi-talented sports figure of the day, Tuffy proudly represented the City of Niagara Falls. |
