Full size image of plaque Gordon Johnson was a very versatile athlete, participating in many local sport programs, such as baseball, softball, basketball, and football from 1935 to 1942. Johnson played on many local baseball teams in the "Niagara Falls Baseball Association". At Stamford Collegiate Institute, Gord played both football and basketball for the school. In 1943, Johnson joined the Royal Canadian Air Force, playing football for their championship team in 1944. In 1945, Gord played for the Montreal football team in the "Big Four" Canadian Football League. Gord returned to Niagara Falls in 1946 to play with the Football Dynamos, who became intermediate finalists and Ontario champions in 1947. Gord's baseball career resumed with the Niagara Falls Terminal Coffee Shop Intermediates who lost the Ontario championship to Batawa, Ontario. In 1947 and 1948, he pitched with the Fiores senior team before playing with the Ford seniors from 1949 until 1953. In 1949, the Fords won the Niagara District championship four games to three, and in 1950 the team made it to the Provincial finals before losing to Waterloo. In 1957, he pitched for Kerrio's who won the Provincial senior championship eliminating teams from Welland, London and Whitby. He played softball with his employer's team, Provincial Engineering, for many years helping to provide top grade entertainment at the old Simcoe Street ball yard. Gord also gave back to the community, serving many years on the hospital board, his church's mens' club, and the Niagara Falls Kiwanis. |
