SCVFA Bantam Baseball Team 1980

     
     The summer of 1980 marked a very successful season for the SCVFA Bantam Baseball Team. Under the leadership of coaches Paul Campigotto and Barry Noble, the Bantam squad of twelve boys ages fourteen and fifteen, were able to complete the Niagara District regular season play in first place, with a record of 21 wins and 3 losses.
     The teams tournament play was also a mark of their success that season. In the 5th Annual McDonald's Earlybird Baseball Tournament, the team advanced to the finals through remarkable teamwork and determination by defeating teams from Kitchener, Oakville, Burlington, and Stoney Creek. After dominating the final game for six innings, a couple of errors led to their defeat by Welland in a 5-3 finish. The teams performance at a tournament in Burlington that season also highlighted their abilities on the field. The boys pulled out impressive victories over Huron Park, Streetsville, Sudbury, and Stoney Creek on their way to the finals, where they lost to Amherst. Returning to league play in the Niagara District, the boys were able to bring it all together for a remarkable finish to an outstanding season. They defeated St. Catharines three games to none in the Niagara District playoffs to earn a berth in the Ontario Finals. During the Ontario Finals the team continued their spectacular play and defeated Barrie two games straight to advance to the finals. In the final series against Chatham, tied at one game each, the SCVFA Bantam Baseball Team won the third and deciding game by a score of 1-0 in extra innings, to capture the Ontario Baseball Association Provincial Championship.
     This team was a great credit to the GNBA, who always carried themselves with class and represented the City of Niagara Falls well. Their title of Ontario Champions is truly a great accomplishment.
