Full size image The Fallsview Firemen Major "A" Midget Ice Hockey Team, under the guidance and admiration of coach John Sorley, captured the 1961-62 All Ontario Major "A" Midget Ice Hockey Championship. The J. H. Stafford Trophy, emblematic of the championship, was accepted on behalf of the team by the captain, Brian Cornell. Prior to the Ontario play[downs], the team received the Stamford Police Trophy for winning the Niagara District Championship. This hockey team was one of the best to ever represent local minor hockey. They won the championship with 21 straight victories, no losses and no ties. Their goals for average was 5.7 and goals against average was 1.7, a truly amazing accomplishment. Players from this team went on to represent our City in junior, college and professional ice hockey. Many still reside in the city of Niagara Falls. [1998] |
