Full size image Brights celebrated the return of Niagara Falls to the senior ranks by outclassing the opposition to capture the 1938-39 Ontario Hockey Association senior 'B' title. Johnny Mowers, later to star with the Detroit Red Wings, played in goal and the lineup included several players who also toiled for the provincial junior 'B' champion Good Cheers. Coach Mickey Roach, a former N.H.L. star and minor professional league pilot, was succeeded by Art Smethurst late in the season. After playing in the Big Six senior O.H.A. group, Brights eliminated a tough Brantford team and advanced to a round robin series with Chatham, Peterborough and Waterloo. Displaying smart combination and a powerful scoring punch, Brights went undefeated in six games to qualify for the best of three final against Waterloo. Brights outplayed Waterloo in every aspect of the game, winning 6-3 and 7-3 to take the series. |
