| Description
| "CANADA MARQUIS," a bulk freighter built in 1983 in Glasgow, Scotland for Misener Transportation of St. Catharines, Ontario, has a cargo capacity of about 25,000 tons. The huge carrier, entering Lock 4, is 730 feet long and squared off at the stern to maximize the amount of ship that can fit into the 80-foot by 800-foot long locks. In fact, the canal is officially named the Welland Ship Canal because it can handle ocean-going ships. The surge tank in the background is part of the St. Lawrence Seaway Welland Canal hydro generating station. |
