||"CANADA MARQUIS," a bulk freighter built in 1983 in Glasgow, Scotland for Misener Transportation of St. Catharines, Ontario, has a cargo capacity of about 25,000 tons.|
The huge carrier, entering Lock 4, is 730 feet long and squared off at the stern to maximize the amount of ship that can fit into the 80-foot by 800-foot long locks. In fact, the canal is officially named the Welland Ship Canal because it can handle ocean-going ships.
The surge tank in the background is part of the St. Lawrence Seaway Welland Canal hydro generating station.
