Notes  Niagara Falls Heritage Foundation Government of Canada Local Initiatives Grant AK 2403-9 1974 - 1975 ; research by George Seibel ; When the portage was moved to the west side of the River, it was necessary to widen the road that had so far been followed by all the traffic between the "new landing" and the Chippawa, a route winding through the settlements and following the most suitable ground. On March 31st 1790, the first Commissioner for Roads for Nassau (as the area was then called) were appointed. They were John McNabb, Andrew Butler, Jacob Tenbroek, Charles Pettit, Robert Lotteridge, Robert Nelles, Gilbert Tice, John Warren, Elijah Phelps, Jacob Ball Jr., and John Powell - excerpted from The Niagara Portage Road by Ernest W Green ;
