Title | Fred's cabin on the ice bridge / Niagara Falls in Winter |
| Creator
| Barker, George |
| Description
| from a stereo image no. 215 by George Barker for the private collection of Thomas D. Mahoney Buffalo New York |
| Notes
| The shanties used on the ice bridge were made of a wood covered with tar paper, and they came from the Canadian side. There was a convenient road there, leading down to the water's edge, and besides, the Canadian police were more lenient. At times some enterprising individual on the U.S. side would get the idea of going into business and throw planks over the bank at the U.S. incline, planning to pick them up later and build a shack. It was a simple matter for the U.S. Police to collect the fallen timber and confiscate it, thus thwarting plans. Taken from Niagara - Maid of the Mist |

Title | Men on cable car over the Niagara River, Clifton Hotel in background |
| Creator
| Bierstadt, Charles |
| Description
| date circa 1868 |
| Notes
| The men in the cable car are engaged in the work of binding together seven smaller cables, into one large cable. The bridge work began in February when a rope was pulled across the ice bridge, then this rope was used to draw over the first cable composed of 133 no. 9 wires. Seven of theses smaller cables were drawn over, then bound together into one cable 7 inches in diameter. The total weight of the suspended portion of each of the main cables was 82 tons. The Niagara Gazette of August 5th 1868 reported that the 5th cable had been placed in position the day before and that "the cables and anchorage are of great strength and look as if they would last as long as trees grow and waters run" - George Seibel ; |

On October 21st 1868 the Niagara Falls Gazette reported "work on the New Suspension Bridge was so far advanced that people crossed on Thursday. Title | New Falls View Upper Suspension Bridge - Entrance - Canadian side |
| Creator
| Barker, George |
| Description
| NSB - 20 |
| Notes
| Original held in the collection of Earl W Brydges Public Library, Niagara Falls, New York ; The Canadian entrance with two tourist couples posing with the gatekeeper. The impressive entrance would not have been out of place on a bank or government building. The entrance was designed to be "highly ornate" to impart an air of "elegance and substaniality". The ribbed surface in the background is the corrugated iron sheets which were used to cover the wooden tower supports. This work was begun on the Canadian side in November of 1871, and on the US side in March of 1872. On July 10 1872, the Niagara Falls Gazette reported "from a huge unsightly and yet picturesque structure - a sort of architectural puzzle - the twin towers have been slowly merging their duality of ugliness into a sightly model of civil architecture" - George Seibel ; |

Title | New Fallsview Upper Suspension Bridge over the Lower Niagara River - Looking toward the US |
| Type
| Still Image |
| Description
| "This view shows the abutments built on the US shore for the new steel arch bridge. The retaining wall built to protect the north abutment from the wash of the Niagara Power tunnel is easily discernible. Notice the bare debris slope above the abutments - the foliage was all uprooted there when the huge stone for the abutments were lowered down the bank to the site. The Daily Cataract of Niagara Falls new York, September 13 1898 wrote about the construction of the abutments as follows three of the stones used in the abutment on the New York State side weighed 6 tons apiece. In lowering them over the cliff a derrick of unusual strength was called into service. The stones were dropped 60 feet to the top of a skidway of planks laid on the debris slope of the bank and lowered along this skidway to the point of work It can be seen that the new bridge will be built up under and to the south of the suspension span shown in the picture". George Seibel |
| Notes
| "this 1897 photograph was published to show the tailrace tunnel outlet from the hydraulic power house of the Dean Adams Generating Plant which was located above the American falls. The retaining wall built as part of the abutments of the new arch bridge is visible just to the right of the tailrace outflow of the Niagara Falls Power Company and the two stone abutments have already been put in place""Niagara Falls - the greatest electric and power city of the world", Niagara Falls, NY, 1897 |
