Title | Fred's cabin on the ice bridge / Niagara Falls in Winter |
Creator
| Barker, George |
Description
| from a stereo image no. 215 by George Barker for the private collection of Thomas D. Mahoney Buffalo New York |
Notes
| The shanties used on the ice bridge were made of a wood covered with tar paper, and they came from the Canadian side. There was a convenient road there, leading down to the water's edge, and besides, the Canadian police were more lenient. At times some enterprising individual on the U.S. side would get the idea of going into business and throw planks over the bank at the U.S. incline, planning to pick them up later and build a shack. It was a simple matter for the U.S. Police to collect the fallen timber and confiscate it, thus thwarting plans. Taken from Niagara - Maid of the Mist |

Title | New Falls View Upper Suspension Bridge - Entrance - Canadian side |
Creator
| Barker, George |
Description
| NSB - 20 |
Notes
| Original held in the collection of Earl W Brydges Public Library, Niagara Falls, New York ; The Canadian entrance with two tourist couples posing with the gatekeeper. The impressive entrance would not have been out of place on a bank or government building. The entrance was designed to be "highly ornate" to impart an air of "elegance and substaniality". The ribbed surface in the background is the corrugated iron sheets which were used to cover the wooden tower supports. This work was begun on the Canadian side in November of 1871, and on the US side in March of 1872. On July 10 1872, the Niagara Falls Gazette reported "from a huge unsightly and yet picturesque structure - a sort of architectural puzzle - the twin towers have been slowly merging their duality of ugliness into a sightly model of civil architecture" - George Seibel ; |

Title | Niagara Winter sporting on the ice mountain / Niagara Falls in Winter |
Creator
| Barker, George |
Description
| from a stereo image |
Notes
| Since the fun and frolic of the times demonstrated in the photo, those involved with the annual ice bridges have come to look beyond the beauty and splendour of this natural wonder, and often find it only to be a bother. Such an attitude is demonstrated by writer Brian King in his article Niagara on the Rocks referring to the story of the entrapment of the salvage tug Good News in 1963. The massive ice jam on the Niagara River is an awesome sight of shimmering beauty for the tourist trade, but for boat-owners, shore-dwellers and Hydro officials, it's an awful pain in the neck ... |
