Service Staff from the Adult Reference and Information Services Department is available to answer questions from quick and easy directory look-ups to more complex questions involving in-depth research. The knowledgeable staff will use a variety of methods and resources in order to answer the query.

Staff will evaluate your question and decide on the best source or sources to use to answer it. These sources may include our print and electronic in-house resources, subscription databases, the internet, referral to another agency, or direct contact with an expert in the field.

Some of the most used resources include:

  •     city, company, and telephone directories
  •     Niagara Falls Review microfilm
  •     electronic databases such as Ancestry.com Library edition, Electric Library, the Canadian Reference Centre, Gale Literature Resource  Centre and Novelist
  •     literary criticism and book reviews
  •     medical books and magazines
  •     internet and CD-ROM resources
  •     local clipping and photograph files
  •     career books, pamphlets, and flyers
  •     college and university calendars
  •     financial and legal material
  •     consumer purchasing information

Local History

A major component of the department is the Local History Collection . This collection contains books, photographs, art works, newspaper clippings, microforms, video tapes, sound recordings, and ephemera about all aspects of Niagara Falls and its people.

Much of this collection is available online through the Historic Niagara Digital Collections.
