Ontario Library Association; Computer classes; Taxes & Big Screen Tuesdays

The annual Ontario Library Association Super Conference took place in Toronto last week, and several of our staff took the opportunity to attend the meetings and workshops to glean new ideas and programs, and to catch up on the latest trends and resources available. It is truly amazing to behold – more than 4,500 “library people” in one place over the conference days. All sectors of libraries in Ontario are represented – Academic, Special, Board Members and Public. Usually we meet the end of January and the event is renowned for the fact that there is always a snowstorm which we expect in January, but can you believe it – we still had one, even with the date change!

One of the highlights is always the excellent slate of speakers the organizers schedule for the plenary sessions, and this year we were not disappointed with the likes of LGen the Honourable Romeo Dallaire (Retired), a true hero and outspoken leader for the 21st century. His talk had the audience mesmerized, as he shared his vision of the place of Canada in the world. Politics aside, his humanitarian sentiments are thoughtful and compelling. His best selling book, Shake Hands with the Devil: the failure of humanity in Rwanda, along with the 2008 film adaptation are available at our libraries.

A new series of Computer classes for April and May have now been posted on the library website. They are available at this link.
Class size is limited to a maximum of 6, and each participant will have their own workstation. Classes take place in our fully equipped Computer Training Lab.

On March 9, the Big Screen Tuesday presents a contemporary apocalyptic sci-fi thriller following the prophecy stated by the ancient Mayan calendar. Imagine that the world will come to an end on December 21, 2012! When a global cataclysm thrusts the world into chaos, divorced writer and father (John Cusack) joins the race to ensure that humankind is not completely wiped out. Danny Glover, Woody Harrelson and Thandie Newton are included in the cast and Roland Emmerich is the Director. The film is rated 14A. Join us in the LaMarsh Room at 7pm.

The Rosberg Gallery this month features local watercolour artist Betty MacWhirter. The exhibit is open during regular library hours.

Just a reminder, that Monday March 8 from 9am-3pm is the first of this year’s Canada Revenue Agency Tax Help Clinics for low income earners. Call the library for more information at 905-356-8080.
