A special book display for Remembrance Day has been on view at the Victoria Avenue Library with a colourful poster, Canadian flag and copies of “In Flanders Fields”.
All four libraries will be open as usual on Nov. 11 and two minutes of silence will be observed at 11am.
Borrow new books such as “Show no fear : daring actions in Canadian military history", “Establishing a legacy : the history of the Royal Canadian Regiment 1883-1953" and Christie Blatchford’s “Fifteen days : stories of bravery, friendship, life and death from inside the new Canadian Army".
“The wasted vigil” by Nadeem Aslam is a new novel about an English doctor whose Afghani wife was murdered by the Taliban. He opens his house to a group of individuals who are haunted by the wars in Afghanistan.
New non-fiction includes Ahmed Rashid’s “Descent into chaos : the United States and the failure of nation building in Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Central Asia”.
Borrow recent books about Canada’s current military action including “Canada in Afghanistan : The War So Far” by Peter Pigott, “Friendly fire : the untold story of the U.S. bombing that killed four Canadian soldiers in Afghanistan” by Michael Friscolanti and “The sleeping Buddha: the story of Afghanistan through the eyes of one family” by Hamida Ghafour.
There are many books about Canada and the First and Second World Wars and the Korean War. Videos, dvds and sound recording about the military are in the library collection.
Illustrated, easy-to-understand books are a great way to explain an opportunity Nov. 11 to young children. Borrow “A poppy is to remember” by Heather Patterson, “Remembering : the story of a soldier” by Virginia Mayo and two books both titles “Remembrance Day” by Jill Foran and Meguido Zola.

November 16 - 23 is our annual Count Week. The Library is in need of volunteers to help count the number of people entering the library that week. This count is required annually of all public libraries in Ontario. More than 10,000 people come weekly to the Niagara Falls Public Library.
We’ll sit you down at a table by the front door to keep a stick count of those entering. Volunteers usually sign up for an hour or two. Those interested should telephone as soon as possible Chippawa Branch at 905-295-4391, Stamford Branch at 905-357-0410, the Community Centre Branch at 905-371-1200 or the Victoria Avenue Library at 905-356-8080.
