The Victoria Avenue Library has an ongoing fundraising effort to help purchase additional books and audio visual materials for adults and children.
The sale of local history books is a successful fundraising initiative. There are three new books now on sale.
City Historian Sherman Zavitz has two books published this year. Looking Back Niagara Falls: Historical Notes ($24) presents 45 vignettes about the city which first appeared in the Niagara Falls Review.
The Lundy’s Lane Historical Society has just published a revised and enlarged edition ($23) of Zavitz’s three volume series called It Happened In Niagara which was originally published in 2001 and 2003. It presents the dramatic and unusual stories about our tourist community.
Meet Sherman Zavitz at the library on Nov. 8 from 10am to 1pm when he will be autographing and selling copies of his new books.
Local resident Frank Long launched his new book A Century of Sports in Niagara Falls: Book II ($25) at the Victoria Avenue Library a few months ago. In 2006, Book I ($21) by Long was a bestseller and many local athletes and their families wanted a copy. In these two books, Long has assembled hundreds of photographs of dozens of sports indexed with thousands of names of local athletes.
Copies of other books are on sale while supplies last. These include The Niagara Portage Road: 200 Years 1790-1990 by George Seibel ($25), Looking Back The Niagara River: The Ontario Shore and Then & Now Niagara Falls both by Sherman Zavitz ($25)

You can make a donation by cash or cheque to the library and receive an official income tax receipt. Donations of $300 or more allow you to have a name engraved on the Tree of Knowledge in the lobby of the Victoria Avenue Library or on the donor plaques at Chippawa, Stamford or Community Centre branch libraries. You can add your name, the name of a friend or family member or “in memory of” for someone deceased.
We will give you a free library bag for any donations of $2 or more. This new initiative has been very popular with hundreds of bags being used to carry books and other materials.
The Library will be closed on Thanksgiving Monday. Use the book return slots and visit anytime the library website www.nflibrary.ca to search the catalogue and databases, place reserves, renew your materials and much more.
