In 1965, UNESCO proclaimed that September 8th is celebrated as International Literacy Day – to reinforce the importance of global literacy. Studies verify the clear connection between poverty, health problems and prejudices in countries with high rates of illiteracy. Today the concept of literacy has moved beyond the simple set of reading, writing and numeracy skills to one that involves multiple layers or dimensions of these competencies. “Computer Literacy “is part of the equation and public libraries are the free local access point to resources which can promote and enhance a literate community. From the programming we offer for pre-schoolers, workshops & computer classes, internet access, books and other e-resource materials, and a knowledgeable staff - every day is literacy day at the Niagara Falls Public Library!
Big Screen Tuesday for September 11 will be “What to expect when you are expecting “, the catchy title based on the must have pregnancy bible originally published in 1984. It’s a romantic comedy with a likeable cast including Cameron Diaz, Jennifer Lopez, Dennis Quaid, and Chris Rock that explores having a baby through the eyes of five interconnected couples. Ultimately they come to understand the universal truth that no matter what you plan, life doesn't always deliver. Showtime is 7pm and the rating is 14A.
