May 16th marks the start of a new series of Health & Wellness information programs. This presentation is brought to you in partnership with the Niagara Health System and their Speaker's Bureau. Through this free service, physicians & healthcare professionals share their expertise with community. The first seminar is titled an”Overview of Cancer now and in the Future” and will be presented by Dr. Janice Giesbrecht, NHS Oncology Medical Director. The audience will learn about reducing your risks, early detection/screening programs, treatment options, and future trends in treatment. Dr. Giesbrecht will also be speaking about the Walker Family Cancer Centre being built in St. Catharines, what the new facility will offer and what this means for cancer treatment to the residents of Niagara. This seminar is free and all are welcome to attend in the LaMarsh Room from
2-3pm.

One of our most popular children’s programs this year has been the Tell Tales Reading Program. With the assistance of Therapy Tales volunteers (and their dogs) dozen’s of children have spent some time in our Library reading aloud to the patient “listening” dogs, from a selection of books available to choose from. We will be offering this program again on Thursday May 17th from 3:45-4:30, and it will be resuming again in the fall 2012. The program is free, for ages 6 and over but registration is required. For more information, drop by or call any of our 4 Library locations and register.

Your Niagara Falls Public Library card gives you access to online learning 24 hours a day from the comfort of your own home. Take a moment and try the online Tumblebooks and AudioBookCloud for children found on the Kids Corner of our NFPL Webpage. These are some of the special databases we have added to our collection this year, and endorsed by local school boards and teachers. Be sure to have your library card number handy. You can now also access your TumbleReadables on the iPad, iPhone 4 and iTouch!

Box Office Tuesday @Chippawa on May 15th will feature "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island". This is the sequel to Journey to the Centre of the Earth, both titles roughly derived on the titles by Jules Verne and featuring most of the same cast. Sean Anderson partners with his mom's husband on a mission to find his grandfather, who is thought to be missing on a mythical island. Stars include Josh Hutcherson of Hunger Games fame and Dwayne Johnson a.k.a The Rock. Showtime is at 6pm and the rating is PG.

All branches of the Niagara Falls Public Library will be closed next Monday May 21st for the Victoria Day holiday. Borrower services through the Internet and webpage are available 24/7 and return boxes are available at all libraries when the library is closed for the return of library materials.
