The beginning of each year brings many forecasts of the future. There are also books at the library which do likewise. Typing "future" as a keyword in our online library catalogue produces over a thousand results.

I predict that many people remember the ground breaking books "Boom, bust & echo" by David Foot and "Future Shock" by Alvin Toffler, but there are many others to read as we begin 2008 including "Revolutionary wealth: How it will be created and how it will change our lives " published last year by Alvin and Heidi Toffler.

Also published in 2007 was "The leisure economy" by Linda Nazareth which explains how changing demographics, economics, and generational attitudes will reshape our lives and our industries".

"Apollo's arrow" by David Orrell outlines the science of prediction and the future of everything.

Two other new books are "Oil and the Future of Energy" and "Future Greats & Heartbreaks" which recounts a year undercover in the secret world of NHL scouts.

Read "Mind set! : reset your thinking and see the future" by John Naisbitt.. The author may be best remembered by his bestseller "Megatrends 2000 : ten new directions for the 1990's".

"The next 20 years of your life : a personal guide into the year 2017 " by Richard Worzel was published ten years ago so it would be interesting to see how well it still holds up.

Pertinent still is "Our final hour : a scientist's warning : how terror, error, and environmental disaster threaten humankind's future in this century on earth and beyond " by Martin Rees.

The DVD " Nostradamus " is the story of the life and prophecies of Nostradamus and includes dramatized scenes of his life and classic period images.

Sunday afternoons from 1pm to 5pm will see many families and         individuals using the Community Centre Branch and Victoria Avenue
Library. I predict that more than 600 books, magazines and audio visual  materials will be borrowed every Sunday afternoon this month. Use the Internet, read the newspaper and start some personal research at the library any day of the week.  After the Super Bowl, fans can read new books such as:

 "The  ESPN pro football encyclopedia"

"War without death : a year of extreme competition in pro football's NFC  East"

"Between Sundays", "The GM : the inside story of a dream job and the
nightmares that go with it"

"Rozelle : czar of the NFL"

" Fantasy football : the next level : how to build a championship team
 every season"
