March Break is upon us. It is always a very busy week for our staff providing Children’s Services. Programming is planned at all locations, and registration has been open for several weeks. Some of the activities are already full, however at this time (Monday morning), there is still space available in the Top o’ the Morning Story Time, Dan the Music Man, Mad Hatter’s Tea Party, and the Flowers for you programs. Refer to the website www.nflibrary.ca to register online, or call the Library for any last minute information. All are invited to visit the Library during March Break regardless of whether or not you are attending programs with the children. Books, DVD’s, videogames are all available to entertain and fill the spare time. Why not plan a visit with the family, especially if it has been a while since you where here!

The next presentation in our Exploring World Cinema Sunday afternoon series features the film Kolya (Czech, 1996). Starring Zdenek Sverak, who we have seen last fall in “The Empties”, this film is the story of a retired symphony cellist, now making a meagre living playing at funerals. His bachelor style life is turned upside down, when he is pressured into a paper marriage arrangement with a friend’s single mother niece. As the unlikely couple struggles to adjust to their new lives in Prague on the eve of the 1989 Velvet Revolution, we are treated to witty and humorous story. This film was the winner of the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film in 1996.

If you are a CBC listener, you will know this is the annual “Canada Reads” debate week. Each year a slate of 5 titles is announced in December, along with the guest panelists assigned to defend each one. This year’s titles are:

Fall on Your Knees by Ann-Marie MacDonald, defended by Perdita Felicien;

Generation X by Douglas Coupland, defended by Roland Pemberton;

Good to a Fault by Marina Endicott, defended by Simi Sara;

The Jade Peony by Wayson Choy, defended by Samantha Nutt;

Nikolski by Nicolas Dickner, defended by Michel Vezina.

Our library has extra copies of all of the titles, for patrons who want to take part. So far, “Good to a fault” seems to be the most popular with our readers. Refer to www.cbc.ca/books/canadareads for more information.

The National Post is running a parallel contest; Canada Also Reads – which was started to highlight some of the Canadian books published in the last few years, that they feel deserve more attention. One of the 8 finalists this year is “The Day the Falls Stood Still” by local author Cathy Marie Buchanan. The book is being defended by Tish Cohen. The winner will be selected by public poll, through the National Post website and readers may cast their vote of support at http://tinyurl.com/ya6945q before 1pm on March 12, 2010. This title continues to be very popular with our readers, and is available at all libraries.
