The history of Niagara Falls comes alive in a debut novel “The day the Falls stood still” by Cathy Marie Buchanan , a former resident of Niagara Falls. We are happy to welcome Cathy to the Library on Saturday November 7th at 2pm for a short presentation and discussion of the book and her career. Copies of the book will be available for sale and to be signed. The story begins in 1915 with a poignant description of end of term at Loretto. For anyone who ever roamed those halls, it is very real. The story goes on to bring other recognizable buildings and places back to life. Library staff assisted Cathy as she researched the Local History collection for background and details.
Do you know what your rights are as a consumer? The provincial government handles thousands of call from consumers and debtors caught up in disputes. Chances are you don’t know how to complain effectively and may not know who to turn to in asserting your rights. On November 4 at 7:30pm, Chris Ferguson, Director of Ontario’s Consumer Protection Branch, Ministry of Business and Consumer Services will discuss a wide range of consumer related issues and answer your questions at this informative program. The presentation is co sponsored by Niagara North Community Legal Assistance and will take place in the LaMarsh Room at the Victoria Avenue Library. Call the Library at 905-356-8080 to reserve your spot.
The next Philosophers' Cafe at the Victoria Avenue branch is scheduled for Monday November 2, at 7:00pm. The theme is "What is the internet?" Has the internet changed your life? Are there any detrimental effects caused by the internet or has everything been positive? Should the internet be controlled and censored like television and radio? These are some of the considerations for discussion. The event is free and open to all. Please, come and bring a friend along to the Rosberg Gallery. If you have any questions please contact the Library.
Volunteer Opportunity With November here we are preparing for our annual count week survey which we required to do for the Ministry of Culture. The results are a record of a typical week of all library activities, and we will be “counting” the week of November 15th through 22nd. Consequently we have volunteer hours available at each of our library branches, which require you to count the number of people entering the library. This is just one of the measures and its quite straight forward; however we need counters for all open hours. If you are interested, please contact the library branch you wish to attend and book some hours. Your assistance is very much appreciated.
