All Branches will be closed for Thanksgiving Day, Monday October 12th. The drop boxes are available when the Library is closed for return of your books and library materials and remember online services are available 24/7. You can access your borrower information, renew materials on loan, browse the new items available in the library and place holds. The databases and search engines are always available for those last minute homework needs, all from the comfort of home! Big Screen Tuesday returns October 13, at 7pm, and stars Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson, in a sequel to Night at the Museum. This film was the first major movie to ever be actually shot at the Smithsonian Museum in Washington, and brings to life many of the featured exhibits. Call the Library for more details, or read the review on our website, www.nflibrary.ca. Meet us in the LaMarsh Room for this event. Next Saturday, our Local History collection will be highlighted in a special program, ”Niagara in 3D”, presented by Andrew Porteus our Manager of Reference and Information Services. Stereograph images of Niagara Falls have been scanned and incorporated into a slide show. Stereographs were common from the late 1800’s on and were basically two pictures viewed as one, similar to the view master type camera toys, still enjoyed today. You will need “3D glasses” to appreciate them and they will be supplied for the program. You may bring your own if you have them! Andrew will also give a general overview and introduction to the Historic Niagara Digital Collections, which are available through our website. The Digital Collections website is a comprehensive index of selected resources available in the Local History Collection at the Niagara Falls Public Library. This site will provide you with a starting point for your research -- whether it is researching a family history, local events or an important figure in Niagara's history. Michael Small will be at the Victoria Library today at 2pm doing a book talk on his new book, “The forgotten peace – mediation at Niagara Falls, 1914” Local artists Joan Weaver and Mary Anne Kissner have their works on display in the Rosberg Gallery this month. The Gallery is open during Library hours. Sunday afternoon hours resume next Sunday October 18 – from 1pm -5pm. Both the Victoria Avenue and Community Centre Branches are open through until the end of April (excluding holidays). Staffing is reduced on Sundays, so if you are requiring any in depth or Local history research assistance please contact the library before, and staff will gladly set aside material for you.
