October 18 – 24 is Ontario Public Library Week and the Niagara Falls Public Library is celebrating with a scavenger hunt contest to test your knowledge of your local Library. This year’s province wide theme is “Yours to discover”. If you’re one of our regular patrons, here’s your opportunity to show off what you know about the Library. If you haven’t visited us recently, this is a great chance to stop by, learn about our services and possibly win a prize! Prizes include complimentary passes for a family of four to Niagara Parks Commission attractions and heritage sites, as well as copies of the CD-ROM “Images of a Century: Niagara Falls, Canada 1904-2004”. Discover your library and discover Niagara Falls! Visit any of the four Niagara Falls Public Library locations to pick up your scavenger hunt ballot – each Branch is hosting a separate draw. The prizes will be drawn at the conclusion of Public Library Week.

Next Saturday, October 10th, we will have Michael Small, Diplomat and former Ambassador to Cuba, in the LaMarsh Room presenting his new book: “The Forgotten Peace, Mediation at Niagara Falls, 1914”. In April 1922, President Woodrow Wilson sent United States Marines into the port of Veracruz, during the Mexican Revolution. As a result, Mexico and the US seemed on the brink of war and an international uproar ensued. The governments of Argentina, Chile and Brazil stepped up to mediate a peaceful resolution to the crisis, to which both parties surprisingly agreed and Niagara Falls was chosen as the meeting place. For the citizens of Niagara Falls, the conference brought the world unexpectedly to their doorstep. After it ended, the conference essentially dropped out of the historical memory. This is the first full account of the Niagara Falls Peace Conference to be published in North America since 1914 and from this almost forgotten event important lessons on the conduct diplomacy and international mediation can be drawn.

Books will be available for purchase for $20 and autographed by the author, from 2pm on.

The Philosophers Cafe is back on Monday October 5, at 7pm. At the Victoria Avenue Library. The theme this week is “What is truth”? - and as always, you are invited to contribute to the dialogue in any way you feel best expresses your views, be it poetry, music or pictures…bring it along.

All Libraries have now received supplies of the Hamilton Niagara Haldimand Brant Local Health Integration Network (LHIN) survey postcards. They are meant to offer residents a way to share their thoughts and give feedback on health care experiences and needs in their communities. The goal is to make the system better for everyone.

Remember today is Scrabble Day –between 10 am and 4pm, all are invited to come to the LaMarsh room with their scrabble boards and join in
