October is Canadian Library Month. The theme is “Your Library, Your World: now more than ever”. Canadian public libraries are key community partners that foster lifelong learning among Canadians of all ages, as well as supporting economic prosperity by providing access to information for skills and business development. Did you know libraries were the first place that made computers available to the public? Our libraries in Canada are among the best in the world, and the ever evolving changes in technology and service provision are embraced by the profession as we strive to anticipate the needs of our patrons in the future. Our Fall children’s craft programs are scheduled over the next 2 Saturdays. These activities, offered at all 4 libraries are geared for 6 years and up and require registration. Today’s programs are at Victoria and Stamford. You may register by calling the Library or online. For those High School students, looking for volunteer placement, our children’s programming offers you an opportunity to be involved with the library, while helping staff deliver the variety of activities presented. The hours are good! Please stop by or go to our website and complete a Volunteer Application form if you are interested. The Online Book Club will be discussing the book Prisoner of Tehran by Marina Nemat for the month of October. The author tells of her harrowing experience as a young Iranian girl at the start of the Islamic revolution, in this sometimes terrifying autobiography. Sign into the forum and share your thoughts. It’s easy to join, view the resources bookmarked for you by library moderators, and add your comments. Often when talking to Scrabble players they express great enthusiasm for the game, but then add that they don't play often enough and have too few people to play with. Exceptionally good Scrabble players complain that others won't play with them anymore because they always get beaten! So join us, in the LaMarsh Room at the Victoria Avenue Library on Saturday, October 3, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. when the Library is hosting a Scrabble Day. Tables will be set up so that Scrabble enthusiasts can play each other in a relaxed atmosphere. Bring your Scrabble board and Scrabble dictionary for a fun-filled day. Opponents for each game can set their own rules for times, dictionary lookups, use of proper nouns, and the like, before each game commences. This is a totally informal event open to all ages and players of all skill levels.
