People are often asking me what I have read lately or to recommend a good book to them. I don't pretend to be a literary scholar, but I am a curious person and have a wide range of interests, so having a whole library and new materials arriving weekly, provides lots to browse. Truth be told, I just don't have enough time to read everything I would like to. Over the last few weeks, I have enjoyed several new titles which I will pass on.

“The Incident Report” by Martha Baillie is an interesting novel fashioned around the reports which must be filled out whenever something “strange or disruptive” happens in this fictional Toronto branch library. “At 4:05pm, a Page reported that a pair of dentures had been left unattended in the lobby” (pg. 145). The author has personally had more than 20 years experience working in Toronto libraries, and weaves together a love story, a mystery and a clever commentary of the sometimes bizarre episodes library workers encounter, which in fact underline some sad but true realities of society everywhere today.

S.J. Bolton, a new British author has a first novel “Sacrifice”, which is a thriller, mystery set in the Shetland Islands. The author has a fascination for traditional British folk history, and the young doctor in the story is confronted with the local lore as she tries to make sense of events. Both titles are available at our Library.

For a more formal book discussion, adults are once again invited to join one of our seven popular book discussion groups. The groups meet for about an hour once a month from September to April at the Victoria Avenue Library, Chippawa Branch, Community Centre Branch and Stamford Centre Branch. There are both daytime and evening sessions offered. Pre-registration has started and these sessions usually fill-up quickly. Registration is $8 for the year and groups are limited to fifteen people. The book under discussion is provided by the library. You can register online, in person or by telephone.

Some of the books to be discussed in our next session include: “Run” by Ann Patchett, “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” by Stieg Larsson and “The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society” by Mary Ann Shaffer. For more information, contact Susan DiBattista at 905-356-8080 or Carrie Chiaramonte at 905-371-1200.

For the month of August, the Rosberg Gallery features the works of Ed and Brunangela Fantinel. The gallery is open during library hours.

All branches will be closed on Monday August 3, for the Civic Holiday. The website is available when the Library is closed and book return boxes are open at all locations.

Re: Good reads

Love your suggestions. Will try to borrow these. I was wondering if anyone has read The House of Sand & Fog. I was told by an English University Prof that it was made into a move when I told him that I was disturbed by the non-ending. He said that the move was good but I can't see how.
