The Victoria Avenue Library is hosting a special information program for parents to learn how to prepare your child for elementary school on Aug. 6 from 1:30 to 2:30pm.

At the same time on Aug. 14, parents and their children who are beginning high school are invited to learn more about what to expect and to get ready.

Anyone is invited to these two free programs but they are specifically arranged for newcomers to Canada who want to know what to expect in Canadian schools.

The Library has scheduled them in partnership with SWIS Niagara (Settlement Workers in Schools). Free government and community services for newcomers to Canada are funded by Citizenship and Immigration Canada, the YMCA of Niagara, the Niagara Catholic District School Board and the District School Board of Niagara.

The government is advocating to our newcomer population that public libraries are one of the free services available to all Canadians.

To register, or for more information, contact Alice at 289-668-3214.

A variety of helpful “back to school” library materials are being used by parents and children.

Many parents have been borrowing the library’s picture books and easy reading books to prepare their children for kindergarten and the early grades. “A Place called Kindergarten” by Jessica Harper and “Kindergarten rocks!” by Katie Davis will give youngsters an idea about what to expect. Also borrow “My Kindergarten”, “Max Goes to School” and “9 Girls and Me”.

The children’s department has helpful books to teach youngsters about the alphabet, phonics, vowels, consonants, numbers and math. There are books showing how to write book and school reports.

Older students and parents should consult “Seven Steps to Homework Success” , “The Secrets of Getting Better Grades" and “Test taking strategies and study skills for the utterly confused”.

Parents will find the following books informative: “The School-Savvy Parent: 365 Insider Tips to Help You Help Your Child”; “See Johnny Read: The 5 Most Effective Ways to End Your Son’s Reading Problems”; and “Roadblocks to Learning: Understanding the Obstacles that Can Sabotage Your Child’s Academic Success”.

Our children’s summer reading clubs end on Aug. 15 so there is still time to register and read the books. Those who complete the program are invited to special end of summer parties on the third week of August.

The Library will be closed on Aug. 4. Use the book return slots and visit anytime the library website www.nflibrary.ca to search the catalogue and databases, place reserves, renew your materials and much more.
