Library staff will treat our patrons to more music, crafts and goodies this week at the Chippawa branch library on Monday December 7, from 6-8pm and Community Centre branch on Saturday December 12, from 2-4pm. If you were present this past weekend at Victoria or Stamford, you know already there is another side to your local library. The Open Houses are meant to be our gesture of good will and fellowship to our public as the holidays approach. It’s a chance to see and hear the staff in another role, as they sing or share with you their special Christmas goodies. Please make a point to drop in.
If the holiday season puts you in the mood to do some cooking or baking, may I recommend two new titles we now have in the Library? “Niagara Cooks: from farm to table” by Lynn Ogryzlo, offers a variety of recipes from simple snacks to sophisticated meals. The author, who is featured in local papers regularly, has made a name for herself by promoting the “buy local initiative”, and this book highlights many local farmers and markets. “The Slow Cooker Collection” by Elizabeth Baird and the Canadian Living Test Kitchen includes many of CL’s best slow cooker recipes, with updated classics and brand-new recipes. Copies of both of these are available at all libraries. Reserve a copy today either online or by calling the library.
Keeping with the “spirit” of the season, the next Philosophers Café, on Monday December 7, will discuss the question “What is Christmas”? In a multicultural, multi-religious country, should Christmas be public or should it be a personal and private celebration? Can non - Christians celebrate Christmas? Is it just too commercial, anyway? It is an issue that can be contentious, yet it is difficult to ignore. The discussion begins at 7pm in the Rosberg Gallery at the Victoria Avenue Library.
The Online Book Club selection for December is “Too close to the Falls” by Catherine Gildiner. The author shares her memories that are by turns hilarious and deeply moving about growing up in the 1950s in Lewiston, New York, a small town near Niagara Falls. Click onto the Online Book Club, through the Webpage www.nflibrary.ca and join in the discussion.
“Here and Gone”, Art by Stamford High School seniors and graduates of 2009 is the titles of the exhibit featured for the month of December in the Rosberg Gallery at the Victoria Avenue Library. Not only are they showing their work, they are responsible for the planning and organization of the entire show. The gallery is open during regular library hours.
Meet “Vinnie & Bud” author Vince Thompson today (Saturday, December 5) at the Victoria Avenue Library from 10:30 to 4pm.
