Kids Book Clubs Summer 2012: Get a Bang out of Reading!
By Monika Seymour on
Monday, June 25, 2012
As of Saturday our annual summer reading program is underway and we anticipate a steady “march” of youngsters into our branches as we highlight the 1812 theme. Staff has done a terrific job decorating and creating the props – be sure and stop by just to have a look. Inge Saczkowski, Head of Children’s Services writes: “Are you ready for Battle of the Books? Will you be Team Laura or Team Isaac? Get a cannonball for every book read! The team with the highest stack wins. Blow that other team out of the water, just read! Celebrate 200 years of peace with a rollicking, summer adventure based on the history of our area. You choose to march with brave Brock, or to follow the daring Laura. Who will win this battle? For ages 6-12, all summer at all 4 locations. For your “Ready to read” kids, ages 3-6, we have “Hurrah for Canada” - a celebration of all things Canadian. What says Canada to you? Is it the beaver, moose, maple syrup and hockey? Build our “Hurrah for Canada” page in your reading booklet. We have...

The Niagara Falls Horticultural Society will be hosting their 59th Annual Rose Show on Thursday June 21st in the LaMarsh Room at the Niagara Falls Public Library. Following the busy morning of setting up and judging, the doors open to the public at 4pm. through 8pm. A fresh feature this year is the “Let your imagination flower” colouring contest for children and youth – ages 4-14. Printed forms ready to colour are available at all NFPL libraries and may be dropped off to the library by June 20th. Other crayon, drawing, paint or paste collage works depicting “House & Garden” (approximately 8 ½ x 11) are acceptable. The winners will be named at the show. The Box Office Chippawa movie on Tuesday June 19th is "Good Deeds". This 2012 romantic drama; written, directed and starring Tyler Perry , is the story of wealthy businessman Wesley Deeds who is jolted out of his scripted life when he meets Lindsey, a single mother who works on the cleaning crew in his office building. As he realizes he wants something more from his life – he is ready to make some dramatic changes. Others stars include Gabrielle Union, Thandie Newton and Phylicia Rashid. This is the 11th film Perry has directed in which he stars. Showtime is 6pm and the rating is PG. ...

As June is Senior’s Month, the second program in our free Health and Wellness series is directed at seniors and their families. This month's program is 'Transitioning Care as we Age'. Wendy Robb, of the Niagara Health System will talk about senior's health care concerns, safety issues as we age, what services and programs are available in the Niagara Region to help seniors, and how to determine the right level of care needed. This presentation is brought to you in partnership with the Niagara Health System and their Speaker's Bureau. Through this free service healthcare professionals share their expertise with Niagara residents about health matters and local health care services. No registration required. Join us on Wednesday, June 20, 2012 at 2p.m. LaMarsh Room. "Salmon fishing in the Yemen" is the title of the Big Screen Tuesday feature for the June 12th. This 2011 British romantic comedy-drama is based on the book of the same name by Paul Torday, described as a political satire that centres on the world...

During the month of June, Jordan Fry & Priscilla Brett of Greyborders Press have again arranged The Niagara Literary Arts Festival, a series of events around the Niagara Peninsula promoting local literary talent. Our library is pleased to once again participate in this Festival including tonight's (Monday June 4th) Philosopher's café at 7 p.m. on the theme of The Literary Canon - Good vs. Bad Literature. Do you have thoughts on what the characteristics are of “good literature” and who should determine what that is? What is more important: readability or literary merit? All are invited to join in the discourse at 7pm in the Rosberg Gallery. In addition, this Saturday, June 9th, from 12 -5 p.m. in the LaMarsh Room “A Book Affair” will be held with a variety of presses, artists, and authors in attendance. Books will be available for sale and signing. Author readings will also be held on June 6th and June 21st in the Rosberg Gallery. Visit the Greyborders website at www.greyborders.com for details of these...
