June is “Seniors Month” and the Niagara Falls Public Library is pleased to be able to offer a variety of materials and services for the senior’s in our community including: public access computers with free internet, movies, books, magazines, large print books, eBooks, audio books, and interlibrary loan services. Have you joined a book club, tried craft programs or a movie night, or taken one of our beginner Computer classes? – The Library today is more than just books! Pertinent to Senior’s Month we will be hosting an evening of fun and games –“Tips, Teasers and Games for Brain Health” on Wednesday June 6th. Presenter Jo O’Brien from the Alzheimer Society of Niagara will be offering some tips and strategies to help optimize your brain function as you age, followed by some actual activities to participate in. The Rosberg Gallery of the Niagara Falls Public Library offers a no cost public gallery space to local artists, which is available during library hours. This month the paintings of Lillian Asquith are on display. Individuals or groups wishing to book the gallery need initially to submit an application form for approval (download online from the Publications/Forms link) including information on their work. Please check the Rosberg Gallery on the nfpl website or contact staff for more information. We are currently booking the months of 2013 and beyond. This Tuesday our Big Screen feature will be the 2012 romantic comedy and spy film, “This means War” starring Reese Witherspoon, Chris Pine and Tom Hardy. The story is of two CIA agents, Tuck and Frank who are also best friends, and have been recently benched because someone's after them. May 16th marks the start of a new series of Health & Wellness information programs. This presentation is brought to you in partnership with the Niagara Health System and their Speaker's Bureau. Through this free service, physicians & healthcare professionals share their expertise with community. The first seminar is titled an”Overview of Cancer now and in the Future” and will be presented by Dr. Janice Giesbrecht, NHS Oncology Medical Director. The audience will learn about reducing your risks, early detection/screening programs, treatment options, and future trends in treatment. Dr. Giesbrecht will also be speaking about the Walker Family Cancer Centre being built in St. Catharines, what the new facility will offer and what this means for cancer treatment to the residents of Niagara. Our Big Screen Tuesday, at the Victoria Avenue Library on May 8th will present the 2011 French film “The Artist” – which was highly acclaimed and a winner at this year’s Oscars. Written and directed by Michel Hazanavicius and starring Jean Dujardin, Berenice Bejo and John Goodman (best known as Dan Connor in Roseanne), this unusual “silent movie” is a throwback to the past. Set in 1927 Hollywood, the most admired silent film star of the day, George Valentin is enjoying the success of his latest picture, while bemoaning the coming era of “talking pictures”. He meets Peppy Miller, a young dancer who is set to light up the talkies like no one else and sparks fly as both their fortunes are reversed by the advent of the changes to movie industry. It’s a comedy, romance and drama - rated PG and showtime is 7pm.
