Summer Hours Begin
By Monika Seymour on
Tuesday, June 28, 2011
Summer hours at the library will be in effect starting Monday, June the 27th and will run for the next 10 weeks until Labour Day. Changes affect the Victoria Avenue, Community Centre & Stamford Centre branches, and mainly involve earlier evening closings. The Chippawa branch hours are unchanged. Please be sure and check our website or call ahead. There are still many activities planned all summer long. Movie Night Big Screen Tuesday on the June 28th will feature the 2011 romantic drama “Jane Eyre,” based on Charlotte Bronte's classic novel, from acclaimed director Cary Fukunaga. Mia Wasikowska, Michael Fassbender and Judy Dench star in the film, as our heroine Jane Eyre is compelled to flee Thornfield House, where she has worked as a governess for wealthy Edward Rochester, and finds true happiness for the first time in her life. In this elegant adaptation of the story, Mia Wasikowska delivers possibly the best portrayal of the title character ever. The rating is PG and start time is 7pm. Canada...

Kids Book Club in 3-D: Daring, Dazzling Dragons, Summer 2011
By Monika Seymour on
Saturday, June 18, 2011
Welcome to another summer of great reading, prizes and fun with the Children's Department's Kids Book Clubs. We all know that to avoid summer “brain drain” in children, a summer book club is the answer. Keep your children engaged and literate while still enjoying lazy days with a good book. We have 3 levels of book clubs available at all 4 Library locations this summer. Ready to Read is for ages 3-6, Rockin' Readers is for ages 6-11 and Slammin' Readers are for our teens, ages 12+. Our theme this year is Kids Book Clubs in 3D: Daring, Dazzling, Dragons. Younger readers will complete a cute dragon puzzle, one piece for every book read, and receive a “jewel” when they complete the program. Our middle readers will put a shiny scale on our huge over sized dragon for every book read, making him 3 dimensional by summer's end. As usual, we have great prizes, wonderful new books and the dazzling smiles of staff waiting for you and your kids. Our thanks this year again to McDonald's, we love that ice cream, yummy pizza...

Downloading audio books workshop
By Monika Seymour on
Tuesday, June 14, 2011
Our library has been offering downloadable audio books and eBooks for just over one year, available through funding from the Ministry of Culture. The Overdrive service means you can borrow books without coming to the library and also never have to worry about late returns, since they expire automatically once your loan period is over. In the future this will be the gateway to download music and videos – and at the public library, these services are offered to residents free. Our current usage is almost doubling monthly! With anything new, we understand there is a learning curve and want to help everyone feel comfortable about this product – so staff is offering some workshops. You will learn how to browse, check out and download eBooks from the Niagara Falls Public Library virtual website. You will be able to download to a Windows, a Mac computer and popular mobile devices as well as transfer to devices like the Apple iPod, and Sony reader. You can choose from a text-based digital book E PUB/ PDF. Here's what...
