By Monika Seymour on
Tuesday, April 26, 2011
The Royal Wedding is this Friday and our event planners are busy finalizing the details for our special Breakfast event. It looks like we have been selected by CHCH TV to be a live feed for their coverage. There are still tickets available. The $20 covers the costs of the Breakfast and Champagne. The Ceremony is at 6am so doors will open at 4:30am. Please call any Library for details. Our next Big Screen showing will be on Tuesday Apr il 26th and is "True Grit". This 2010 remake of the John Wayne cowboy classic, stars Jeff Bridges , Matt Damon and Josh Brolin and introduces Hailee Steinfeld in an Oscar nominated performance. It was written for screen and directed by the Coen brothers. The Rating is 14A. Join us in the LaMarsh Room at 7 pm, and you are welcome to bring your own popcorn & a comfy cushion! On Saturday April 30 from 11am to 3pm, in the LaMarsh Room, we are hosting the Book launch of local author Kara Bartley’s latest book “The Moon in Habock’s Mirror”. Programmes @ your library
By Monika Seymour on
Tuesday, April 12, 2011
There are still spaces available for the Saturday April 16th craft programs at the Victoria Avenue Library. Two sessions are being offered; morning at 10:30am and afternoon at 2pm. Looking forward to the arrival of spring, the project is a cute “Feed the Frog” storage box. On the same day, at the Chippawa Branch, the project is a “Rabbit Candy Can”, and it is scheduled to begin at 2pm. Both these programs are geared for children 6 years and over. Registration in person, online or by phone is required in advance for programs.
Also on Saturday April 16th we will have local author Debbie Shaftoe visiting us at the Victoria Avenue Library. She will be selling and signing copies of her first novel “Forged in the Jungles of Burma”. The adventure – spy thriller revolves around a Canadian widow and a British spy who end up cell mates in a Burmese prison at the mercy of the oppressive military junta. Their survival ultimately depends upon their trust and working together. The novel is about love, fear, conquering...

Programs @ your library

“I Did: You Can Too!” is the inspiring book by local author Dorothy Seabourne, and is the account of her travels through Europe and North America by motorcycle. Dorothy has been riding a motorcycle for more than 30 years now – has been through seven bikes in that time, and oh, by the way she is now 70 years old! She likes the speed she feels on her 2005 Honda Gold Wing and claims she is not afraid to share the road with a tractor trailer. On Sunday April 10th , at 1:30pm in the LaMarsh Room at the Victoria Avenue Library, Dorothy will be presenting a slideshow and talk about her travels. She hopes her stories inspire other “older women” to follow their dreams whether it’s on the seat of a motorcycle or something else. All are invited – men welcome too!
The Niagara Falls Family Literacy Event, is a joint initiative sponsored by the various community groups promoting literacy and will take place again this year, next Saturday April 9th at the MacBain Community Centre from 9:30 am – 1pm. It’s a morning of free fun for all families with young children (Birth to 8 years of age). This year’s banner theme is “One Book, Two Book, Red Book, Blue Book” – and every child receives a free book to take home. There will be musical entertainment, featuring “Fun with Brian” at 10 am and 11:30am, storyteller – Mr Fun from Great Wolf Lodge, face painting, crafts activities a play area and lots more. A free swim session for the family follows at 1pm. For more information call the Ontario Early Years Centre at 905-357-2398.
