Tuesday February 22, our Big Screen feature is “Hereafter” starring Matt Damon, Cecile De France and Frankie McLaren. The film was premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2010. Clint Eastwood is the Director of this drama centered on three lonely people who are haunted by mortality in different ways. George (Damon) is a blue-collar American who has a special connection to the afterlife. On the other side of the world, Marie (de France), a French journalist, has a near-death experience that shakes her reality. The 10th Anniversary edition of Canada Reads or “Canada’s version of Survivor” as I heard quoted by one commentator, wrapped up this week on CBC Radio, and the book “The Best Laid Plans” was declared the winner. The author, Terry Fallis specializes in political satire and won the 2008 Stephen Leacock Medal for Humour after he self published this book. He knows politics having joined the campaign team of Jean Chrétien in 1984, a year after graduating with a degree in Engineering! He has spent many years as a government affairs and communications consultant. Unlike in past Canada Reads debates, though, this year's panellists had to choose the book they would defend from a list of 10, which had been voted on by Canadians and proposed to be the list of the top 10 essential Canadian novels of the decade. The Niagara Falls Public Library is pleased to once again host free income tax preparation clinics for low-income earners. Individuals must meet income guidelines to participate and must register in advance. All clinics will be held at the Victoria Avenue Library.

Members of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario and volunteers from the Canada Revenue Agency’s community volunteer income tax program will be on hand in February and March to complete personal income tax returns.

The Chartered Accountants program takes place on several Wednesday and Thursday evenings in February and March. The 30-minute sessions run from 6:00 – 9:00 pm. To qualify, individuals without dependents must have a total household income of less than $20,000. Individuals with dependents must have a total household income below $30,000. If two or more individuals in one household are employed, the combined household income must not exceed the limits.
