Just as we go to the polls every 4 years to elect our Municipal leaders, our Niagara Falls Public Library Board is appointed by the new Council for a concurrent 4 year term. With the elections now over, one of the first duties of the new Council will be to post the application information for the various Boards and Commissions in the City of Niagara Falls, and appoint qualified citizens from the applicants to these positions. We know that several of our venerable Board members will not be reapplying this time round and so it is important that we get the word out to prospective applicants.

The Niagara Falls Public Library operates under the authority of the Public Libraries Act, RSO 1990, which requires that the City appoint 9 trustees, one of whom is an elected official representing the City of Niagara Falls to this Board. A Board member may be reappointed for one or more further terms. The Library Board is then responsible for establishing policies and appointing the Chief Librarian who administers...

Let’s Do The Time Warp Again! For adults, we will be showing the 1975 cult classic “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” on Saturday, October the 30th at 4pm in the LaMarsh Room. You are welcome to come in costume and there will be a draw for door prizes for those who do. For anyone not familiar with the film, the story is based on the British stage production that parodied B-movie horror and sci-fi films. Starring Tim Curry as Frank’n’Furter, a transvestite scientist trying to create the perfect man, it became the first movie from a major Hollywood studio to be sold as a “midnight movie” in the late 70’s. The midnight movie concept...

It’s October, and libraries across the country will be celebrating Canadian Library Month. The theme this year is “Your Library, Your World: Opening Doors to the Future,” and will highlight the many ways that libraries constantly evolve with the introduction of new ideas and concepts.

There are more than 22,000 libraries in Canada––in schools and universities, in the public, corporate, and non-profit sectors, as well as government departments. In addition, our national library, the Library and Archives of Canada, is responsible for collecting and preserving our documented heritage and providing access to this collection for all Canadians.

Canadian libraries are key players in supporting literacy. Libraries are where prospective citizens can prepare for their Citizenship tests, students can study, businesses can research markets, parents with young children can enjoy stories and song through programming, and everyone can enjoy the latest literary or DVD bestsellers.
