Can’t go away for March break? Looking for something fun and low cost in your own community? Take a look at the March break programs offered by your Public Library. We have over 30 programs available at our 4 Library locations.

For all ages family fun, come to “Dan the Music Man’ with his rollicking, entertaining musical show, at the Victoria Avenue Library on Wednesday, March 17 at 2:00. You can also enjoy “Music with Brian” with his friends Melody the Hippo and Alan the Lion, on Monday, March 15th at the Community Centre Branch Library at 2:30 pm. Again, an event that can be enjoyed by the whole family. Have a budding artist in your family? Let them try painting a wonderful scene on canvas, available Monday morning at both the Victoria Avenue and Stamford Centre Branch Libraries, or at the Chippawa and Stamford Branch Libraries on Monday afternoon, and Tuesday morning and afternoon at the Community Centre Branch Library Feeling a bit green? Freedom to Read Week 2010

Libraries are so good that they do not have just one patron saint but three! Arguably, the most famous of these is Saint Lawrence the Librarian. In the year A.D. 258, as part of the Roman persecution of Christians, imperial guards searching for membership lists demanded the surrender of the church's archives. Lawrence previously had hidden the archives and refused to divulge their location. Legend has it that the guards tied him to a grid iron over a charcoal fire, but Lawrence still refused to relinquish the archives, telling his tormentors, 'I am roasted enough on this side, turn me over and eat.' Even today, pilgrims still visit the basilica over the tomb of this librarian who died to defend his archives.

Our next patron saint is Catherine of Alexandria a hugely popular figure during the Middle Ages. Many European chapels and churches were named after her and she was also an advisor to Joan of Arc. Her reputation as a scholar led to her patronage of libraries and librarians, archivists and teachers. She died being tortured on a fiery wheel which resulted in her having a firework named after her.

The Niagara Falls Public Library’s Victoria Avenue location is pleased to host free income tax preparation clinics for low-income earners. Individuals must meet income guidelines to participate and must register in advance.

Members of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario and volunteers from the Canada Revenue Agency’s community volunteer income tax program will be on hand in February and March to help complete personal income tax returns.

The Chartered Accountants program takes place on several Wednesday and Thursday evenings in February and March. The 30-minute sessions run from 6:00 – 9:00 pm. To qualify, individuals without dependents must have a total household income of less than $17,000. Individuals...
