Are you considering training for a new career? Our Library and the Business Education Council Career Planning Service have free information sessions on eligibility, services and funding opportunities. No registration is required to attend any of the free sessions to be held at the Victoria Avenue Library on March 4 from 10 to 11:30am, March 26 from 2 to 3:30pm, April 8 and April 22 from 10 to 11:30am. A free two-part resume writing workshop will be held on March 25 and April 1 from 9 to 11:30am at the Victoria Avenue Library for the first 15 people who register by calling 905-356-8080. You will receive a new or updated paper and electronic copy of your resume. The Library offers this program with the Niagara Falls Job Resource Centre of the Business Education Council and Service Canada Niagara Falls Centre. The next Philosophers' Cafe at the Victoria Avenue Library is scheduled for March 2nd at 7pm. The theme is "What are Drugs?". “Freedom To Read Week” is celebrated this week across Canada. Libraries recognize the diverse nature of their communities and the varied backgrounds and unique needs of their citizens. Library collections seek a wide variety of viewpoints and balance of opinions. Our Library Board endorses the Canadian and Ontario Library Associations’ statements on intellectual freedom. The provision of library service is based upon the right of the citizen, under the protection of law, to judge individually on questions of politics, religion and morality. It is the responsibility of libraries to guarantee and facilitate access to all expressions of knowledge and intellectual activity, including those which some in our society may consider to be unconventional, unpopular or unacceptable. Libraries should resist all efforts to limit the exercise of these responsibilities while still recognizing the right of criticism by individuals and groups. Libraries will comply with all laws including the Criminal Code of Canada prohibitions...

Our library celebrates our heritage in many ways. The library’s popular website www.nflibrary.ca is an excellent starting point and rich in local history information . When you click on “Search Catalogue” look for three special links. The first is “Special Collections ” where you will find the following resources: local history collection, birth records, marriage records, death and cemetery records, the Niagara River Repository and the Casino Niagara Cares Regional Heritage Collection. The second link is “Frequently Requested Topics” where you will find “War of 1812" which highlights fiction and non-fiction materials which can be borrowed as well as a growing number of full-text books and other materials about the War of 1812 which are online to our users 24/7. The third link is “Award Winners and Other Lists”. Click on “Canadian Materials” and then the selection of new Canadian books by Canadians or about Canada. The Victoria Avenue Library is pleased once again to host free Income Tax preparation clinics for low income earners. Members of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario and volunteers from the Canada Revenue Agency - Community Volunteer Income Tax Program will be on hand on dates in February and March to complete personal income tax returns. The Chartered Accountants’ program takes place Wednesday or Thursday evenings beginning February 18th, through March 26. In total there are nine dates available. The thirty minute sessions begin at 6 pm through to 9 pm. They are available to those whose total income is less than $17,000without dependants, or less than $25,000 with dependants. The Community Volunteer Program sponsored by Canada Revenue Agency will be offered on Mondays March 2nd and March 9th, between 9 am and 3 pm., in the LaMarsh Room. This program provides trained volunteers who give their time to assist you. They are not employees of Canada Customs, or tax experts knowledgeable in complicated tax returns.
