The next Philosophers' Cafe at the Victoria Avenue Library is scheduled for Jan. 5 at 7pm. The theme is "What is reality?" This discussion series has been successful as a group of interesting residents talk and think about an issue each month. A Philosophers’ Café is an informal, open forum for those interested in exploring philosophical questions in a fun and relaxed atmosphere. The purpose of the café is nothing less than to help transform the world one conversation at a time. No philosophical training is required – real life experience desired. A philosopher exists in all of us. Considerations for discussion include how does one perceive reality? Can one’s reality be altered or changed? Is there a difference between reality and actuality? Has your understanding of reality changed or stayed the same? Is reality exactly the same for all of us? What shapes reality? Is reality different from a thousand of years ago? We all, at least on occasion, ask the difficult questions: What is the meaning of life?...

You can see what new books and other resources have just arrived at the library in the past week or two. Click on “search catalogue” on our website www.nflibrary.ca and then “what’s new”. You will see listings for new biographies, fiction, dvds, music CDs, mysteries, non-fiction, science fiction, talking books, teen fiction, bestsellers and children’s materials.

Register soon for affordable Winter children’s programs which start Jan. 5 at our four libraries. Bouncin' Baby Time: Mommy & Me & Books consists of music, rhymes, tickles and bounces for children four to eleven months of age. Bring a blanket and let us introduce you and your baby to a variety of board books and activities. This program is about twenty to thirty minutes in length and runs eight weeks for only $4 at Victoria Avenue Library and Stamford Branch and six weeks for $3 at Community Centre Branch. Due to limited space, no other siblings may attend. The "Baby Time: Beginning With Books" program for children 12 to 23 months of age and the "Toddler Time: Growing With Books" program for two year olds are thirty minute one-on-one interactive morning programs designed for a parent or care-giver to enjoy with a child by exploring stories, songs and music. Our library is committed to ensuring the safety of users and staff in its programs, facilities and services. We endeavour to foster an environment where there is respect for others and responsibility for all actions.

The Library will exercise zero tolerance to any form of violence, vandalism or inappropriate behaviour.

All users and staff have the right to be safe and to feel safe. With this right comes the responsibility to be accountable for actions or behaviours that put at risk the safety of others and the enjoyment of the library.

Our goal is to promote a positive, safe, enjoyable and supportive environment for all users and staff in library programs and facilities, and to increase the level of understanding and awareness of library policy.

Users of library facilities are to report immediately acts of violence, vandalism or inappropriate behaviours to a library staff member immediately or within 24 hours

Public libraries promote Canadian award-winning books at this time of the year. Many have been recently recognized in the past few weeks. See the Online Research Tools on our library website www.nflibrary.ca to find other great books and reviews in such databases as Novelist and Literature Resource Centre and borrow the following great reads.

Joseph Boyden won the Scotiabank Giller Prize for his novel Through Black Spruce, “an astonishingly powerful novel of contemporary aboriginal life, full of the dangers and harsh beauty of both forest and city”.
