You can have your photos scanned for free at the library on Nov. 1. Do you wish to scan a photograph but don’t have a scanner? Then bring them along to this free library programme.

Among the most precious possessions we could conceivably lose are our photographs. They take us back instantly to places we have loved and the people who were such a special part of our lives. They connect us in many cases to the past.

Yet they are one of the most fragile items we own. They can discolour, they tear, and in some cases, they even become faded to the point of extinction.

On Saturday November 1st between the hours of 10 am – 4 pm in the LaMarsh Room of the Victoria Avenue Library, we will host a session that will digitally scan your photographs to a CD which will be yours to keep. Starting tomorrow both Community Centre Branch Library and the Victoria Avenue Library will open again on Sunday afternoons from 1 to 5pm.  Sunday hours at both libraries will be from now until April 26 except for Dec.21, Dec. 28 and Easter Sunday April 12 when they will be closed.  On average, people borrow more than one book every sixty seconds when the libraries are open on Sunday afternoons! Hundreds of people borrow books, magazines, videotapes, DVDs, audiotapes, compact discs and even CD-ROMs. Some come to research personal, business and school subjects. Others enjoy reading out-of-town newspapers and current magazines. Many view the monthly exhibitions and displays throughout the library. Dozens...

The Victoria Avenue Library has an ongoing fundraising effort to help purchase additional books and audio visual materials for adults and children.

The sale of local history books is a successful fundraising initiative. There are three new books now on sale.

City Historian Sherman Zavitz has two books published this year. Looking Back Niagara Falls: Historical Notes ($24) presents 45 vignettes about the city which first appeared in the Niagara Falls Review.

The Lundy’s Lane Historical Society has just published a revised and enlarged edition ($23) of Zavitz’s three volume series called It Happened In Niagara which was originally published in 2001 and 2003. It presents the dramatic and unusual stories about our tourist community.

Meet Sherman Zavitz at the library on Nov. 8 from 10am to 1pm when he will be autographing and selling copies of his new books.

Local resident Frank Long launched his new book A Century of Sports in Niagara Falls: Book II...
