The public is invited to meet Niagara mystery writer Beverley Armstrong-Rodman on Aug. 28 from 7pm to 8pm in the LaMarsh Room of the Victoria Avenue Library. She will read from her new book "Baa Baa Black Death", talk about her story and autograph books. Her first novel "Murder is a Family Matter" was published last year.

The new book again takes place in the Niagara area, mentioning locations familiar to local readers. The author also takes readers to some exciting adventures in Muskoka and treats us to a few lively escapades at a beautiful Florida resort. Some favourite characters from her first book also appear in the second one. It's summer in Niagara Falls. It's hot, humid and deadly. A murderer is carefully choosing pretty young women as victims. He walks among us waiting and planning....

Hundreds of people have looked at a display at the Victoria Avenue Library of sixteen black and white photographs of buildings and other structures which no longer exist in Niagara Falls.

The display titled "Those Were The Days" will bring back memories of our community's past including the Eaton's Store, Stamford Park racetrack, the Clifton Hotel, the Union Bus Terminal, the Niagara Wire Weaving Plant located at the former Pyramid Place and the Lundy's Lane School.There is a photo of the demolition of the Canadian National Railway Station at the corner of Bridge St. and Victoria Avenue, the Bush Estate built by Samuel Zimmerman on Clifton Hill, Cyanamid, the J.A. Russnell Funeral Home on Huron St. and a former parking area in Queen Victoria Park.

See Barnett's Niagara Falls Museum in 1881, Barker Street School in 1919 , the Oneida Community Plate building and crowds at the Victoria Park Station awaiting a Niagara St. Catharines and Toronto Railway NSCT train.

The second Teen Night of the summer will be held on Friday August 3 from 7pm to 10pm at the Victoria Avenue Library.

The rock group "Marshall's Falling" will perform starting at 7pm and the group "inlimbo" will perform at 9pm.

An "Open Mic" will be held at 8pm where anyone is invited to read a poem or a story, play an instrument (as long as no setup is required), juggle, sing, do a comedy routine or anything similar. To perform at Open Mic, please contact in advance Andrew Porteus at 905-356-8080 or online.

Tickets are $2 in advance at any of the four libraries in Niagara Falls or $4 at the door with a limited number of tickets on a first come basis. Seventy-five tickets were purchased for the first Teen Night held last month.

Boxes containing 38 library copies of the new J. R. Rowling book "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" were unpacked by staff this morning, quickly processed, and distributed to our four libraries where more than seventy people have placed reserves waiting their turn to borrow the instant bestseller.

Go to the catalogue on the library's website www.nfpl.library.on.ca, type the book's title, click on it, then click on reserve. Type your library card number and PIN number and indicate at which of the four libraries you wish to pick-up the book when it is available.

First telephone the library at 905-356-8080 or come in person to receive a PIN number. After you receive a random PIN number you can change it at any time to one you will remember readily. With it, you will also be able to see and update your personal information, check your reserves, material on loan, any amount due and your payment history.
